I heard a work around for this once and it helped me. Instead of saying “I am …” and using something you don’t actually believe, you say “show me when I was …” or “show me that …”. After repeating this to yourself often, your brain will do just that and start searching for things in your past or present that fit. For me it was like the curtain of my negative confirmation bias lifted. Once you start seeing examples that support the trait, then you can start affirming it.

I always hated affirmations because I was like “Why am I saying this to myself when it’s obviously not true?” I prefer to think of them as aspirations or intentions, and by keeping them top of mind I naturally find ways to make them a reality.

affirmations are a very powerful tool. You can learn to feel differently about yourself and the world by telling yourself that that what you are affirming is reality.But IMO the real value of affirmations is that you can’t affirm something that isn’t true. So when you say or think an affirmation and there is little or no basis in your belief system to support that belief, your unconscious will present you with the reason(s) that you can’t yet believe it is true. You can then examine those issues and take steps to resolve them.
This makes affirmations a very useful tool for self discovery.
